Effect of Rare Earth and Ca Micro-Alloying on the Microstructure and Anisotropy of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheets

AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets can be applied as 3C electronic product shells. However, exhibit obvious anisotropy, which limits their industrial application range. The composition modification of is a good choice to improve the anisotropy sheets, but effect multi-element micro-alloying on microstructure and still less investigated. For this aim, plasticity after adding Ca rare earth elements such Y Gd were investigated in paper. It found that, different from alloying role single or Y, composite addition 0.2Ca 0.2Gd obviously enhance sheets. As result, elongation rolling direction (RD) direction, 45° transverse (TD) increased 12.5% 22%, 5% 18.5%, 1.5% 8.5%, respectively. This explained follows: Al8Mn4Gd phase formed by consumes lot Mn, thus avoiding formation brittle phases Al8Mn5 leading improved mechanical properties study will offer solution for enhancing formability under condition not significantly increasing production costs.
